President Vladimir Putin of Russia says it is unlikely that the impeachment of Donald Trump would be upheld by the United States senate.
Speaking in a televised news conference on Thursday, Putin alleged that the charges against the US president were “fabricated”, adding that Trump’s Republican party has the majority in the upper chamber and would not want to remove its representative from power.
He said the Democratic party was seeking revenge for losing the presidential election to Trump. “It’s unlikely that they would want to remove their party’s representative from power for what are, in my opinion, absolutely fabricated reasons,” Putin said. “One party that lost the election, the Democratic Party, is achieving results with other methods, accusing Trump of collusion with Russia, then it turns out there was no such collusion”. Trump was impeached by the US house of representatives on Wednesday.
The lower chamber of the congress, where the Democrat has the majority, found him guilty of abuse of office in the Ukrainian affair in which he was accused of seeking foreign interference in US politics — an impeachable offence.
The US president will remain in office until he is tried and convicted by the senate.
There are reports that Russia interfered with the 2016 elections in the US, backing Trump to clinch the number one position in the US but Trump has denied the allegation.
